Surfing Puerto Escondido, Mexico

Surfing Puerto Escondido, The Mexican Pipeline

One of the most famous, most powerfull beachbreak barrels in the world. Located at Zicatela beach, the wind generally blows offshore until 10 or 11 in the morning, then it gets blown out.

The Puerto Escondido beachbreak can hold triple-quadruple overhead without closing out, but it is a beachbreak, so there are closeouts.

Wave selection is critical. Most people don't wear a leash out here, for fear of hitting the board.

Bring several boards, of the gunnier variety, because you are almost sure to break one or two, but there are plenty of local ding -repair guys who can fix broken boards overnight, this is thier speciality.

Some maps of the Puerto Escondido area.

There are several other waves in the area:

"La Punta," or the Point, is a left point wave that is about 3/4 mile up the beach, a, fast left, fun surfing without the consequences of "the Mexican Pipeline."
